Nearly every sport has its award for the best players in their field and poker is no exception. While poker is a centuries-old game, the Poker Hall of Fame has only existed for the past thirty-one. It is no real surprise that it was founded in Las Vegas, Nevada, where poker is the ruling force of the city.

The Poker Hall of Fame was designed as a means for Benny Binion to help promote and advertise his Horseshoe Casino. He felt that setting up a way to honor and remember the great poker players from the past and include outstanding current players would serve as both honorarium and tourist attraction.

Benny Binion has always been known for his creative approach to marketing poker. He was the driving force behind the 1949 beginnings of publicly viewed high-stakes poker by arranging a game between Johnny Moss and Nick the Greek for all to see. Binion created the World Series of Poker in 1970 to bring the best of the best poker players together in tournaments with international appeal. Then in 1979 he began the Poker Hall of Fame.

Chosen by the World Series of Poker commissioners, there are several qualification requirements for those who are being considered for the award. The nominee must have played against acknowledged high level competition and played for high stakes. They must have demonstrated consistently good play and done so in a manner as to gain the respect of their peers. And finally, they must have maintained this over the years to establish themselves. Non-players can be nominated provided they have contributed significantly to the growth and respectability of the game.

When you visit an online casino nowadays you will almost invariably find that the casino is offering a number of promotions which include bonuses and/or free bets. These can range from just £20 or so right up to £3,000 or even more. Some bonuses are awarded as free bets just for signing up and those tend to be under £50 or so, and others are deposit matching bonuses which are awarded as a percentage of your initial and sometimes subsequent deposits.

Although some online casinos have very impressive headline bonuses, you need to delve a little deeper than the headlines in order to discover their real worth. Make no mistake: these bonuses can be extremely valuable and are a great way to profit from your time playing online, but you also need to understand the terms on which they are offered.

These bonuses are all non-cashable. Of course this makes sense. If they were cashable then you could just sign up and walk away with an instant profit; the casinos would soon go out of business.

What non-cashable bonuses give you are free gambling chips to play with. What you get to keep is not the bonus but the profits you make using the bonus to play with or make bets.

When it comes to use your bonus as playing chips, there are always additional terms and conditions that determine when you can make cash withdrawals. If the bonus is a ‘free’ bonus and is awarded without the need to make money, then you will need to ‘play through’ it a specified number of times before you can make a withdrawal. Generally this is between 20 and 30 times and whilst some games, such as slots, will count 100% towards this play through requirement, others such a blackjack, will count just a few percent.

With deposit matching bonuses you will need to play through the total of initial deposit plus bonus. For instance if you claim a 150% initial deposit bonus on your fist £100 deposit, then you will find that you will have £250 worth of chips in your account. The play through requirements tends to be as above with free bonuses, which means that with a 20 times play through you need to bet a minimum of £5,000 before you can withdraw any cash. If you choose to play games such as blackjack then this can increase significantly.

When it comes to playing online roulette there really isn’t any choice apart from Betfair. Betfair casino is the only place on the internet where you can play roulette with a zero house edge. In fact this is not restricted to just the internet; it is (as far as we are aware) the only casino in the world that has a roulette wheel that does not include a zero.

So, you might ask, why is that so important? The house edge on American roulette, which has both a single and a double zero, is around 5.3% and on European roulette, which has just a single zero, is 2.7%. The house (casino) wins when the ball lands in either a single or double zero pocket.

Ever since the game of roulette first appeared back in the 18th century, countless gamblers have attempted to devise methods to reduce the house edge. Naturally they were seeking not only to reduce it but to reverse it in favour of the gambler.

Some achieved this by recording the outcomes of roulette wheels over a large number of spins in order to detect any bias on the mechanical wheel that could be induced by mechanical imperfections in its manufacture. Many of these were successful and often they made huge sums of money from their endeavours.

Another approach was to make predictions on the most likely outcome of the spin by recording the position and trajectory of the ball after the wheel had been spun and before last bets had been called. Some were clever enough to do this by close observation, but most used electronic assistance in the form of a pocket computer which was sometimes augmented by the addition of invisible infra-red laser radar for tracking the ball. Again there have been several examples of fortunes being won (and also of arrests and prosecution as the use of mechanical or electronic aids in a casino is illegal).

In online roulette the outcome of the spin is determined by a random number generator so it is impossible to predict, monitor, or modify the outcome of the spin. Thus the house will always have the advantage.

Apart, that is from the Betfair casino. With a zero house edge you have the same chance as the casino of winning. Thus it really is the best place to play roulette online.

There are a very large number of different kinds of poker games, or poker variants, though the vast majority of them are classed according to three families. These are ‘draw poker’, ‘community card poker’ (for example Texas Hold’em) and stud poker. Here we will take a look at the last of these families, stud poker.

The most popular forms of stud poker that are played today are five card stud and seven card stud, though three card stud used to be very popular and it is still played today. There are also 6 card stud, Razz, Caribbean, Mexican and other stud poker variants. With all of these games players are dealt combinations of cards that are dealt both face up and face down and involve multiple rounds of betting. Unlike community card games, with stud, players have their own specific cards and do not share card values with other players, and unlike draw poker (where players are allowed to exchange their cards) players must play the cards that they are dealt.

To illustrate how the game works we will take 7 card stud as an example.

Each player is dealt two cards face down and one face up. The face up card is generally referred to as the third street. The player with the lowest ranking card pays some money into the pot. This is the first bet and is called the bring-in.

A round of betting ensues and when that has been completed each player is dealt another card face up. This is known as Fourth Street. There is another round of betting and another, Fifth Street, card is dealt face up followed by yet another round of betting and another face-up card, Sixth Street. After the ensuing betting round each player receives a final card (Seventh Street) but this is dealt face down.

There is then a final betting round and at its conclusion the remaining players ‘showdown’, which means revealing the best poker hands that can be constructed from just five cards. The player with the highest ranking hand wins the pot, though if it is a tie then the post is shared.

Draw poker is a family of poker games where each player is dealt a full hand before the first round of betting takes place. In the following rounds each player will then have the chance to develop their hand by replacing cards they hold with cards from the deck.

Five card draw is considered the most popular, although it does find itself confined to home games or online games rather than at a table within a casino. The popularity of Texas Hold’Em is likely to be the main reason why.

Five card draw is played with a hand being dealt to each player to begin with. Each player has the chance to look at their hand before the first betting round, If the player wishes to remain in the hand they will place bets, in a clockwise direction either from the dealer or from the big blind, depending on if it is a home or casino variant. After the betting any players who still want to be in the hand will draw cards, they can replace up to 3 cards, unless they hold an ace, in which case the 4 other cards can be exchanged, in an attempt to obtain the winning hand. Following this draw there will be the second round of betting and if anybody remains after this then it goes to a showdown.

There are also lot of variants of draw poker that are local to a specific region, for example, Gardena jackpots was a very popular game in California between the 1930’s and 1970’s. The introduction of stud based and community card based poker games however saw a decline in the draw poker variant.

If you are looking to experience for yourself what draw poker is all about then head on over to OCK where you can have a go and learn some neat tips along the way.

Card games of various sorts have been around for many centuries. One of the first recorded games of cards that held a resemblance to modern poker was the German game of Pochspiel. Dating from the 15th century, this game incorporated hand ranking, betting, and the use of the “bluff.” The evolution of card games such as this to the game we know as poker really took off with its introduction to the New World.

Coming into the continent via the Mississippi River from New Orleans in the mid 1700′s, the focus of the game became more on the wagering aspect than just the play of the cards. By this time a standard 52 card deck was the primary playing tool for games such as stud or straight poker. There was a 20-card variation played along the lines of a British version.

The game of poker spread to the western part of the country during the California Gold Rush. It was out West that the card rank of the Flush first appeared in the game. The “Draw” also developed during this phase of poker’s evolution. During the War Between the States further variations emerged. 5-card stud was introduced and the hand rank of the “Straight” came into being.

By 1875 the concept of the “Wild Card” was included. By the turn of the 20th century further variations such as “Lowball” and the “Split-Pot” poker variations were established in the game. The mid 1920′s saw the first poker games that incorporated “Community” cards. As the century has progressed, new games of poker such as Texas Hold’em and Omaha poker have been born and raised to worldwide popularity. As ever, the prime focus is still in the excitement of the gamble.

The recently proposed Digital Economy Bill has been quickly pushed through Parliament after just three readings and only two hours of debate in the Commons. While purporting to only be concerned with blocking instances of copyright violations it would seem a harmless law. However, the some of the wording of the Bill imply some frightening possibilities within its execution on the world of the Internet.

British citizens have enjoyed the right to gambling since the Lottery appeared in the 1930′s. Gambling of all forms, from Online Poker to wagering on the World Cup or the Nationals is an important part of the British way of life.

Since the 1960′s the government has increasingly applied taxes and regulations on the gambling industry. With the powers allowed to the government in this Digital Economy Bill they are allowed to block any site they feel may be “likely to” infringe on a copyright. However, the definition of what is “likely to,” a concept of draconian implications, is left ambiguous and entirely up to the government’s discretion. The wording is so broad that Google itself could be banned from the Islands since it can be used to search for downloadable material in violation of copyright laws.

Does the Digital Economy Bill, on the fast track to becoming the law of the land, give the government the tool they need to ban online gambling from the UK. Are they going to follow suit of the American cousins who have so restricted online gambling of their citizens to the point a casino or poker room has to make special arrangements just to afford Americans the chance to play?

Regardless of the type of poker you play, there are basic styles that can be strategically used during game play to enhance your gambling earnings. Learning to use these styles and recognizing them in others can give the observant player that extra winning edge.

The art of Aggression consists of strategic opens and raises, forcing the pot up even on weak hands. The Bluff is a critical element of Aggressive play but must not be allowed to control all your plays, making you predictable to other players and more easily taken advantage of. As example, only playing aggressively on strong ands will signal your opponent when to fold quickly and cut their loss.

The Check-Raise style of play bases its usefulness in its deceptive nature. For a Check-Raise, you may have a good enough hand to continue with but Check anyway in hopes that someone else will Open the hand. If this happens the player is then free to match the opening bet or raise as the play commences. The greatest loss is limited only to the initial pot investment if the hand is not opened.

Strategically the Isolation play is one of the most formidable styles you can encounter. There are elements of both the Bluff and Aggression in an Isolation attack against a specific player. It usually involves making a Raise on a hand with the hope and intent of forcing another player to drop out of the hand. Used primarily against those who predictable raise to weak hands, it can also be used to narrow the playing field down to a specific opponent you wish to defeat.

Poker comes in many forms and even more variations of specific popular games. While almost all the forms use a standardized ranking system and similarities in the play of the cards, there are three basic “families” of poker games to choose from. These are determined mostly by the specifics of how the cards are dealt and wagered upon.

Straight Poker is the most basic of poker forms. The play is simple, with a complete hand dealt to the players and then a round of betting and raising taking place until the winner is determined. A favorite variation of this is Draw Poker where, after the first round of bidding, players are allowed to exchange a number of their cards for new ones in hopes of forming a better hand. This allows a second round of betting and raising with each hand played.

The next oldest family of poker games is Stud. Originally played with three cards, five card and seven card varieties quickly came into being. In Stud Poker you do not hold your cards but leave them laying on the table. As the cards are dealt, first the hidden “hole” cards and then beginning with the rest face-up, each subsequent card dealt initiates another round of betting on the final outcome.

Having its origins in the 20th century, Community Card Poker has become an extremely popular form of play. This poker form gives the player several hold cards of their own to use along with a series of cards laid out face-up on the table that can be used by any or all players as part of their final 5-card hand. Omaha and Texas Hold’em are two of the most popular variations of Community Card Poker.

Poker has long been the game of choice when people gathered to entertain themselves. One of the most popular images of the game comes from the long line of classic movies set in America’s Wild West of the 1800′s. From swinging saloon doors, smoky barroom tables, and the girls who worked the room, cowboys seemed to gravitate to the poker tables no matter how far out into the wilds they roamed. From this culturally iconic age have emerged term and conditions that are still with us today whether we remember their history or not.

Although the term “dead man’s hand” originally referred to any number of combinations, it has canonized itself in poker legends as a two-pair hand of Aces and Eight’s. This was supposedly the hand being played by Wild Boll Hickok when he was gunned down from behind on August 2, 1876. While it has been popularly agreed that his hand included only the black suits of Clubs and Spades, the term still applies to any color combination of an Aces and Eight’s pair. Since the popularization of this murder, many players have quickly folded when they receive this ill-fated combination in their draw.

Another term from the Wild West involves the situation when a player, assured of victory with a strong hand, will bet everything he can to maximize his stake. Wagering “the Nuts” refers to the practice of including their horse and wagon as stake by placing the nuts of his wagon’s wheels on the table. It was still a risky play as losing would mean the player was then stranded with no transportation out of town.
